Intro for Week 1 Nativity Lesson (The Angel Visits Mary, Then Joseph) – Let’s Talk About Gifts!

(Hold up toy). Let’s talk about gifts! Can you tell me about a present that you've been given, that you really liked? (Give the children each a chance to say one thing). Those sound like great gifts! In the next few weeks, we're going to be talking about some of the gifts that God gives us! These gifts are even better than the very best gifts! These gifts are from God! They last forever! Let’s listen closely to this true bible story. Then we’ll find out what the first gift is.

Let’s Build with Joseph!

(Stand up Mary puppet) This is Mary. Mary was a young woman in Bible Times. Mary loved God, and she loved to serve God. Mary was going to get married soon to... (Set Joseph Puppet next to Mary) Joseph! Joseph was a carpenter. Do you know what a carpenter does? (Give the children a chance to answer). Yes. A carpenter builds things like houses and furniture. Let's all pretend we are building. (Let children "hammer" or “saw” on the table. Set Joseph aside).

Let’s Pretend to be Angels!

(Stand up Mary puppet) One day Mary got a surprise: All of a sudden, an angel came down from heaven! The angel’s name was Gabriel. (Bring Angel puppet down from above.) Let’s pretend to be angels! (Show children how to “flap their wings” to “fly”).  You all make great angels!

Mary was afraid when she saw the angel! But the angel Gabriel told Mary she didn't have to be afraid. He had great things to tell her! He told Mary that she was highly favored by God. That means that God is being especially kind to her. The angel told Mary that she would have a baby soon – not just any baby!  This baby was from God! His name would be Jesus, because he is the Son of God! He would be great! And, he would rule forever and ever! What a great surprise!

The angel Gabriel also told Mary that her cousin Elizabeth would have a baby too! Mary knew this was a miracle because Elizabeth was very old! The angel explained, "With God, anything is possible!" And Mary believed the angel. She trusted God, so she told the angel, "Yes! I want God's plan for me!" The angel left. Then Mary had time to think about everything. Do you think Mary was happy about what the angel told her? (Let children answer). Yes, I do too!

(Joseph Puppet) Let's see how Joseph is doing. God didn't leave Joseph all by himself to wonder about all this. (Bring Angel down from above). God sent an angel to Joseph too. Let’s pretend to be angels again!  (Flap your “wings” again). The angel told Joseph that Mary would have a baby from God; and that they should get married, just like they had planned. The angel said the baby's name would be Jesus because he would save the people from their sins! Then Joseph also knew it was God's great plan! Do you think Joseph was happy too? (Let children answer). I do too!

Let’s Take a Trip With Mary:

(Mary Puppet) After the angel visited Mary, she wanted to go see her cousin Elizabeth! So, she packed her bags and started on the long trip to Elizabeth's house. We can pretend we’re going with her. This is the sound of Mary's feet as she runs. (Pat your lap real fast and encourage the children to join you). When Mary got there, it was a great time of joy! As soon as Mary said “Hello!” to Elizabeth, the baby inside of Elizabeth jumped for joy! Mary told Elizabeth all about how the angel came to visit her, and the great things he told her! Elizabeth said to Mary, "You believed what the angel told you. Now you’re blessed by God!" To be blessed means that God is doing kind things for you.

Mary was so full of joy that she sang a beautiful song to God with all her strength. Mary praised God for taking notice of her, and being kind to her. Everyone would know that God had chosen her to be the mother of Jesus, God's own Son!

Free Nativity Action Rhyme for Children – The Gift of Joy!

Who wants to do the motions to this rhyme with me? It’s about Mary’s song! As you read through the rhyme (left column) show children how to do the actions (right column.

Rhyme: Actions:

Mary sang a song to God above;

Point up.

A song from her heart; a song of love.

Cross arms over chest.

“Thank you, God for noticing me!”

Point to yourself.

“You've done great things, and all will see!”

Point to your eyes.

She sang of God's special joy.

Jump up.

This joy is for every girl and boy!

Point to a girl and boy.

God blesses those who worship and praise,

Raise hands in praise.

To those who pray and follow his ways!

Place hands together as praying.

Thank you, God, for this special joy!

Jump up.

It’s better than books, games, or toys!

Hold up one finger, then two, then three.

I want to know you more and more!

Point up.

You’re my great God, the one I adore!

Place hands together as praying.

Free Nativity Group Activity: Let’s Open Gifts!

God took special notice of Mary.  She was a humble young woman who wanted to do what God wanted her to do. Did you know that God also takes notice of each one of you, just because he loves you so much? He sees _____ and ______ and... (Name each child and helper in the class). God sees me too.
(Mary Puppet or picture) We learned that Mary loved God! She was willing to be part of God's plan, and she trusted God. She told the angel, “I want what God wants!" Mary wanted to be used in God's great plan. And, God gave Mary special blessings when she trusted God. He gave her a good friend, Elizabeth, and a nice husband Joseph. And, best of all, he gave her baby Jesus! She was so happy to be part of God's great plan! She was so glad that God would choose her to be the mother of God’s own Son!
God also gave Mary another gift.  Let’s open a gift and see what else he gave her.  (Take the wrapped "Gift of Joy" from your basket). Who would like to open this gift for the class? (Pick a child who volunteers and let them unwrap it). Thank you (helper's name). Let's see what it says. It says, JOY! (Show the word Joy and the Happy Face). One of the gifts God gives to us is Joy! Joy is like being happy and thankful at the same time. (See Activities for instructions).
Mary was so full of joy that she sang a special song of praise to God. She also praised God for being kind to all people who trust in God! Let's read that part of Mary's song from our Bibles: (Read Luke 1:50). That means God is kind, and promises to give blessings to all those who trust in him and his Son, Jesus! And, when we trust in Jesus, he gives us joy. We’re happy and thankful at the same time, deep down inside because we trust in God.

We'll learn lots more about God and Jesus in the next few weeks! I hope you can all come back to hear some more of the true Bible story of how Jesus was born, and more about the great gifts God gives us!
Let Me Pray Prayer Time

Prayer Sample: (This is just an example of what you could say. Listen to the Holy Spirit and say the words he gives you.) Give children a chance to pray also.

Dear God, Thank you for loving us so much, that you take notice of us. Thank you for giving us joy when we trust in you. Thank you for all the blessings you have planned for everyone who trusts in you! In Jesus' name, Amen.

The Angels Appeared in the Night Sky Above! They Brought the Great News of God’s Peace and Love!

View the Lesson Snapshot below or get the download to seehow the lesson is set up.
Concepts Children Learn: Lesson Prep:

God brought peace to us when he sent Jesus!

Set up your stable with straw (paper shred) inside. (See Week 2 for instructions). Make a field for the shepherds and sheep: Tape two sheets of green construction paper together.  Cut it in an oval shape. Draw some flowers on it or add flower stickers. Set the stable on one end of your table, the field on the other end of your table; and begin with Mary and Joseph in a 3rd area of the table. See Activities for how to make the Children/Hearts Picture.  Lesson Tip: Patiently and gently show children how to do everything and tell them what to say. Encourage children to participate, but allow them to just sit and watch if they want to. Allow plenty of time for children to add some of their own actions and ask questions. Make sure all the children who want to participate, have a chance to join in. Make extra angels if you have more than 14 children in your class, so everyone can join in when many angels appear near the end of the story).

God gives peace to anyone who trusts in Jesus!

Jesus gave us a chance to be friends with God.

3D Paper Bag Nativity Scene (Diorama)
Paper Bag Stable Craft for kids Paper Bag Shepherds craft p1
Roof from Paper Bag craft p2
Paper lunch bags (flat bottom)
Glue sticks
Crayons
Clear tape
Paper scraps
Ruler
Scissors (grown-up only)
Paper shred (or cut up construction paper or tissue paper

Prep: Cut out pictures and roof for children. Cut 5” X 1-1/2” strips of paper. Fold into rectangle shape and tape closed. Do the same with 3-1/2 X 1/4” strips. Craft: Children color pictures and roof. (You could also make copies of the roof onto brown copy paper.

Step 1 - Draw the “doors” of the stable.  Across the front of the bag, 5/8” from the bottom, but not all the way to the sides. Leave 1/4” at the sides, where you’ll fold the doors open. Draw a line up the middle of the doors, 4” high, and across the top, to the 1/4” mark at the sides. Cut open the doors and fold open.

Draw a straight line 1” above the doors. Cut bag at each of the 4 corners, down to the 1” mark, on the folds, so you have 4 flaps.  Fold the back flap forward, and glue down into the bag for reinforce-ment on the back wall. Fold the side flaps across the top of the bag to make a flat top, and tape. The front flap will be the roof. Fold it back, across the top, forming a fold at the top middle to make a slanted roof shape, and fold under a 3/4” tab at the back. Secure with tape. (There are photos in download).

Step 2 – Tape the big rectangles to the middle of the back wall with rolled tape.  Place another piece of rolled tape on top of the rectangle. Children stick Nativity picture on the tape.

Step 3 – Tape the small rectangle shapes on top of the Nativity picture. Place rolled on top of those. Children stick the animals, on top of that, so they pop out away from the Nativity picture.

Step 4 – Children put some “straw” in the stable. Glue the shepherds to the inside of the stable doors. Write words on the (wood texture) roof, such as “Sleep in heavenly peace” or “God’s gift to the world”, etc.  Fold roof in the middle and glue to top of stable roof.
