Free Sunday school Lesson - Lesson 1 - I Can Join God's Army! The first lesson in the series teaches how we can "Join" God's army. The children learn that God is our great commander; and that he is a kind commander. Because of his gentleness, kindness and forgiveness, we don't have to be afraid to do the things he asks us. We can just follow. It is demonstrated, with a children's activity, that if a soldier tries to go it alone, he ends up carrying a heavy load of guilt, fear and worry. They also learn that when they are afraid, Jesus is our advocate who helps us when we are weak. During Circle Talk Time, it is explained, in simple terms, what it means to let God be your leader and join God's army; and that God has great things planned for each of us. There is a model prayer for all the children, and another prayer for those who want to accept Jesus into their heart. For activities, children have a chance to sign up to join God's army. Other activities include a pretend play activity, rhyme with actions, and a second activity to drive the lesson concepts home. The Key Concepts are: We show love to God by letting him be our leader and giving him our heart. God is a kind commander. We can trust our commander completely! The Bible verses used for this lesson include : Jer. 29:11 and Psalms 18:29-34.

Sunday school Lesson 2 - Training Camp! - Children to training camp in God's army! Children learn that soldier do many exercises to get stronger; and learn different exercises to make their faith stronger. Children learn the importance of reading their bible (or having someone read to them), worshipping, spending time with God in prayer, and going to different church activities to help their faith grow. The activities drive these concepts home by giving each child a Workout Journal to help them design their own workout to make their faith grow strong! Other activities include a pretend play activity, a rhyme with actions, and an activity with army men toys. There are pictures of soldiers on each page to color. During Circle Talk Time children are encouraged with simple verses of God's love, protection and help he offers us. Crafts include Army Bear puppet, and a craft that has a moveable shield that protects the children like God protects us. Concepts Children Learn: A soldier in God's Army trains hard by staying close to God, reading his Bible, praying, and obeying him. I don't have to be strong; my commander makes me strong, protects me and helps me! The verses used in the lesson are: Job 23:12; 1 Timothy 4:7-8; James 4:8a; Psalms 18:29b, 30, 32, 34. There is a simplified separate lesson for ages two and three.
Craft page for Timothy lesson with concept: Keep your focus
Sunday school Lesson 3 - Keep Your Focus! - This practical, fun lesson teaches children these important concepts: When we keep clean on the inside, God can use us for special purposes. To keep clean, we can be careful how we live. We are to set a good example for others to copy. The verses used in lesson are: Proverbs 20:11; 2 Tim. 2:20-22; Hebrews 12:2; 2 Tim. 2:4. This lesson gives practical examples of how we can watch what we see, hear and say to keep clean on the inside. For Circle Talk Time, we use an object lesson to show children how to be a good example for others to copy. Activities to go with this lesson include a game, a preschool rhyme with actions and a group activity. For crafts, children make a paper doll chain that says, "I can be a good example for others to copy." The other craft is a doll that opens to show a clean heart and says, 'Its o.k. to get dirty sometimes, but our Bibles tell us to be clean on the inside." As with all of the lessons, there is a separate easy lesson especially for toddlers.
Sticker craft for Timothy lesson. Children learn to serve cheerfully.
Sunday school Lesson 4 - Serve Cheerfully! The concepts taught in this lesson include: God gives us special abilities so that we can be really good at doing some jobs. God gives us everything you need to do our jobs well. When we use our abilities to help others, and share with others, God will give us rewards in heaven. This lesson encourages children by emphasizing that God didn't leave anybody out...he gave us each special abilities. And it gives them ways they can begin using their abilities even at their young age. It also helps children begin to focus on what's to come - rewards in heaven! The Circle Talk Time uses an object lesson to show children what that means. There is a warm-up activity, two pretend play activities and a rhyme with actions to go with this lesson. There is a sticker craft using the Bible reference of Ephesians 6:8 that tells us that the Lord will reward us for the good things we do. Also, children make a booklet with stickers about their abilities God gave them. The other verse used in this lesson is Romans 12:6-8.
Picture to color for God's Army preschool lessons.
Sunday school Lesson 5 - The concepts taught in this lesson include: God wants us to do everything with love. There are things we can "put on" to show love to others. Love is what joins our hearts together. The verses used in this lesson are: 1 John 4:21 and 1 John 4:19. This fun lesson shows children first hand the "clothes" we have to "put on", based on Colossians 3:12-15 (love, mercy, kindness, humility, patience, gentleness, and forgiveness). It explains each one in kid-friendly language. Circle Talk Time explains how our hearts can be "joined together in love". There is a warm-up activity, pretend play activity, song with actions and a group bulletin board activity. The crafts for this lesson include a bear-shaped booklet and paper dolls with the "clothes" they learned to put on in the lesson.
Sample of printable coloring page, children go tell others about God's love.
Sunday school Lesson 6 - New Recruits! Children learn these concepts in this lesson: God shares his Top Secrets with us. The special mission he gives us is to to tell others about him. He will help us as we do our special mission. The most important thing is to love others. Children learn about God's Top Secrets and about what our special mission is as soldiers in God's army (to go and tell others). Circle Talk Time discusses some practical ways children can tell others about Jesus. Scriptures used in this lesson are: Mark 16:15; 1 Cor. 4:1; Matthew 28:20; John 13:34-35.

LESSON: I Can Be a Soldier in God's Army!

Intro: (1) This is Paul. (Point to Paul). He was a preacher. He taught the lessons of the Bible to all the people. This is Timothy. (Point to Timothy). Timothy was Paul's helper. Paul loved Timothy like a son. Paul knew that Timothy wanted to teach people too. But Timothy was still young, so Paul told Timothy some important things to guide him. During the next few lessons, you will learn some of the important things that Paul told Timothy. Paul knew that loving God was the most important thing. We learn this from our Bibles, in the book of Matthew. The leaders of the church asked Jesus the question, "What is the most important command?" Here is what Jesus said: (Read Matthew 22:37).

So how do we love God with all our heart and soul and mind and strength? The first thing we can do to show we love God is to give him our heart, and let him be our leader. (2) Paul told Timothy how to love God by giving him an example. He used the example of a soldier obeying his leader to show us how to love God. I'll explain: (3) Soldiers in the army have a commander. The commander is their leader who guides them. (Point to commander). The commander tells the soldiers where to go and how to get there. He does the hard job. He has to have a plan. The soldiers have the easy job, they just follow their leader. (Point to soldier). Its the same in God's army. God is our great commander! He loves to lead us and guide us! And, he has a great plan for each of us! Here's what he promises us: (Read Jer. 29:11). Isn't that great? We don't have to have it all figured out. (Shake head no). God has the great plan! We have the easy job. (4) Our job is just to follow him. When we ask him to be our leader, he helps us come to know his heart. And, he helps us want to do what is right. He also helps us do all the good things he has planned for us to do! The child in this picture is thinking, "I wonder what great things God has planned for me?"

But what if a soldier in God's army doesn't let God lead him? (Have child with loaded backpack come to you). What if he tries to do everything himself? Then he would need to take a lot of things with him. His load would be too heavy and it would weigh him down. He wouldn't be able to walk very fast. (Ask for a child who wants to come up to help you. Ask the child if its o.k. to place backpack on him/her). (Child's name), can you show us how hard it is to walk with the heavy backpack. (Have child walk back and forth across the front of the room for a while). When we carry a heavy load, we get tired quickly. But in God's army, we don't have to carry a heavy load! Here's the promise Jesus gives us: (Read Matt. 11:28-30). Jesus makes our load light! We don't have to be weighed down with worry because we can rely on him. (Open child's backpack and take out some water bottles). We don't have to be weighed down with confusion because we know our leader will tell us the best way to go. (Take out the more things). We don't have to be weighed down with fear because Jesus is with us! (Take out more things). We feel joyful, knowing we don't have to go all by ourselves. Its much more fun to walk with Jesus because we know he is our best friend! And we know he will be with us the whole way! I sure like letting Jesus carry my heavy load! (Child's name), show us how easy it is to run with a light backpack. (Have child run across the front of the room). And off he/she goes! Look how fast he/she can go now! Thank you, (Child's name) for helping us with the lesson today. You did a great job!

You might be thinking, "How do I know that God is the kind of commander that I want to lead me?" (5) Well, In some armies the commander is mean. The soldiers would be very afraid if they do something wrong. The rules are strict, and if you make a mistake, you are punished. But, in God's army, we don't have to be afraid. (Shake head no). (6) Jesus already took the punishment for us when he died on the cross! (7) So when we go to God and tell him we are sorry, he forgives us! And, he treats us with gentleness. He knows we are just people. He gives us another chance to do better next time. He is a kind commander, so we don't have to be afraid.

You might be thinking, "How can I know if I can trust my commander?" Sometimes a soldier has to do some scary things. He might have to go into a dark forest all by himself. But his commander tells him how to go and what to do. If he doesn't trust his commander, he might be afraid. But, in God's army we can trust our commander completely! We know that God has the very best plan for us! And, when we trust God, its not scary to do what he asks. (Shake head no). (8) We know God will help us when we call out to him. And, we don't have to do the scary things all by ourselves. God stays with us the whole way!

Maybe you are thinking about joining God's army, but you are thinking, "What if I mess up? Will I get kicked out of God's army?" No. Do you know why? Because we have an ad-vo-cate! That's a big word. An advocate is someone who is on our side, who cares for us; Its someone who is cheering for us. Can anybody tell me who our advocate is? (Let children answer). Jesus is our advocate! Here's what our Bible tells us: (Read Job 16:19-21). Jesus cares about us so much that he wants us to be a great soldier in God's army! He does anything he can to help us. He speaks gently to God about us, and asks God to help us. (9). He supports us and helps us grow up to be a strong soldier! I'm so glad that Jesus is our advocate! Let's have snack and then we can talk more about how we can give our hearts to God and let him be our leader.

CIRCLE TIME: (What does this mean for me?)

One of the things Paul taught Timothy was to always have a good conscience. Can anybody tell me what our conscience is? (Let children answer). Yes. (10) It is that nagging feeling when we do something wrong. We all have a conscience. It tells when we did something that we should not do. It makes us feel guilty and makes us want to hide. We want to do what is right, but sometimes we don't do what we should. (Shake head no). But, we all want a clear conscience. Nobody likes feeling guilty! How can we get rid of the guilt? Well, in Bible Times the people had to kill an animal to show that they were sorry for their sins. And, God accepted that as payment for their sins. (6 again) Well, we don't have to do that anymore. Does anybody know why? (Let children answer). Yes. Jesus took the punishment for our sins. He died on the cross. He took the punishment that we deserve. He died to pay for our sins once for all time, so that God would forgive us.

Now, when you ask Jesus to be your leader, and believe that he died on the cross to take the punishment for your sins, and ask him to forgive you, he does! And, he changes your heart. Then you are his child, and he is your God. You are a child of God. Instead of doing things the way YOU want to, you ask God what HE wants you to do. You pray to him often and pour out your heart to him. Its a wonderful adventure! He teaches and guides you. (9 again). And, he gives you everything you need to grow and be strong in faith!

This is how we can be in God's army: We believe that Jesus is God's Son, and that he died for our sins. (7 again) We tell God we're sorry for our sins, and ask him to forgive us. (5 again) We ask Jesus to be our leader, and that we want to follow him from now on!

And, did you know that its great to be in God's army? That's because God is such a loving and kind commander! He is the one who made us; and he loves us so much! He lets us be called his children and receive all the great things he has in store for us! Then he rewards us for following him! Just like a soldier gets medals for the good things he does while he is in the army. Let's pray now. (Pray a general prayer, then ask if any children want to pray also and let them take turns praying). Then ask if anyone is ready to ask God to be their leader, and ask them to come with you. I think its a good idea to pray with those children individually, but ask the Lord's guidance on this).

Transition: I will pray first. If anyone wants to pray after me, raise your hand, and I will call on you to take turns praying. And, if you are ready to join God's army, I'll be here to talk to you some more after we're done praying.
Sample Prayer 1 (Pray first, then give children a chance to pray. This is just an example. Let the Holy Spirit guide you in what to say).
Dear God, Please help me
Thank you for learn more about
having a great plan for me! how to love you
Thank you for with my whole heart.
loving me so much! In Jesus' name, Amen.
Sample Prayer 2 - (For those who want to join God's army -- become a follower of Christ. This is just a sample. Let the Holy Spirit guide you in what to say, or let the child pray their own prayer after ascertaining that they understand).
Dear God, And I ask you to come into my heart,
I believe that Jesus is your Son, And to be my leader
And that he died on the cross for all the rest of my life.
to take the punishment Thank you for letting me
for my sins. be your child.
I'm sorry for my sins. Thank you for all the great plans
I ask you to forgive me, that you have for me.
And save me from my sins. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Follow-up (You can use these words or substitute your own, just make sure the child know how you excited you are for them. And follow-up to make sure they get the basics of Christian living. (The other lessons in this series will be a start).
That's so wonderful, (child's name), that you asked Jesus into your heart! Be sure to tell your parents and the pastor, so we can help you learn all about living for God. I'm so happy that now you're are part of the family of God! I'm so glad you joined God's army! (Also ask them if they have any questions and follow-up with their parents and the pastor).
Transition: Now we have some fun crafts and activities that go with this lesson. Activities, Crafts

But Timothy was still young, so Paul told Timothy there were some things that he needed to pay attention to. Paul taught Timothy that the first thing he should pay attention to is to love God! That is most important!

So how do we show that we love God? We can let him be our leader. (2) Paul used a soldier to show Timothy how. (3) A soldier is someone who fights in the army. And soldiers need a leader, or they wouldn't know what to do! (Point to leader). The leader tells the soldiers where to go and what to do. He does the hard job. He has to have a plan. The soldiers have the easy job, they just follow their leader. (Point to soldier). Its the same in God's army. God is our great leader! And, he has a great plan for each of us! Here's what he promises us: (Read Jer. 29:11). Isn't that great? God has the great plan for each of us! (4) We can just follow him! When we ask him to be our leader, we come to know him as our best friend! And, he helps us follow him! He helps the soldier do good things. The child in this picture is thinking, "I wonder what great things God has planned for me?"

But what if a soldier in God's army doesn't let God lead him? (Have child with loaded backpack come to you). What if he tries to do everything himself? Then he would need to take a lot of things with him. His load would be too heavy, and it would weigh him down. He wouldn't be able to walk very fast. (Ask for a child who wants to come up to help you. Ask the child if its o.k. to place backpack on him/her). (Child's name), can you show us how hard it is to walk with the heavy backpack. (Ask child to walk with you back and forth in front of the room. If its too heavy, take some of the water out). When we carry a heavy load, we get tired very quickly. But in God's army, we don't have to carry a heavy load! Here's the promise Jesus gives us: (Read Matt. 11:28-30). Jesus makes our load light! We don't have to be weighed down with worry because we can rely on him. (Open child's backpack and take out some water bottles). We don't have to be weighed down with fear because Jesus is with us! (Take out more things). We feel happy, knowing we don't have to go all by ourselves. Its much more fun to walk with Jesus because we know he is our best friend! And we know he will be with us the whole way! I sure like letting Jesus carry my heavy load! (Child's name), show us how easy it is to run with a light backpack. (Have child run across the front of the room). Look how fast he/she can go now! Thank you, (Child's name) for helping us with the lesson today. You did a great job! Let's have snack. Then we will talk more about what kind of leader God is!

CIRCLE TIME: (What does this mean for me?)

(5) If I was a soldier, I would want a kind leader. But, in some armies the leader is mean. The soldiers would be scared if they did something wrong. In those armies, if you make a mistake, you are punished. But, in God's army, we don't have to be afraid. (Shake head no). (6) Jesus was already punished for for our sins when he died on the cross! (7) So when we go to God and tell him we are sorry, he forgives us! He gives us another chance to do better next time. He is a kind leader, so we don't have to be afraid.

Sometimes a soldier has to do some scary things. He might have to go into a dark forest all by himself. His leader tells him how to do it. But, the soldier might be afraid if he doesn't trust his leader. But, in God's army we can trust our leader! We know that God has the very best plan for us! (8) We know God will help us when we call out to him. And, we don't have to do the scary things all by ourselves. God stays with us the whole way!

Its great to be in God's army! God is the one who made us and loves us so much! He has so many great things he wants to give us. I hope we will all follow God and join his army! Let's all say a prayer together and thank God for being such a kind leader!

Transition: I will pray first. If anyone wants to pray after me, raise your hand, and I will call on you to take turns praying.
Sample Prayer 1 (Pray first, then give children a chance to pray. This is just an example. Let the Holy Spirit guide you in what to say).
Dear God, Please help me

Thank you for and follow you.

Pretend Play Activity - God's Army - Tips: Please do not force the children to participate in the activities, especially this one, if they do not wish to (as God doesn't force us to follow him). Have other activities they can take part in instead, toys, playdough, etc.
Supplies Needed:

Prep: The teacher and assistants can also dress in army fatigues and hats also. Help children put on the Army clothes over their own clothes. As you do, talk ot them about the concepts of the lesson, or some of these as well: God is the greatest commander we could ever ask for -- God! He is kind. He is forgiving if we do something wrong. And he gives you another chance to do it right. He even helps you do it right the next time. He gives you special instructions. He gives us everything you need to live the Christian life! He even gives us special gifts, so that we can do special jobs for him! He gives you lots of love, to love others.

While some children are getting into their Army clothes, help other children put on their camaflouge face paint. (Put some brown, green or black on their cheeks). Also paint a red heart. The red heart means God loves you. - place on hand if you can't see it on their face with all of the other colors.).

Follow-the Leader: Have children form a line behind the teacher or one of the assistants, and play follow the Leader. You can march, do jumping jacks, walk in a circle, jump, skip, do arm movements, dance, etc. Then let the children take turns being the leader.

Before children go home, help them get out of their Army clothes and wash off the face paint.

Children's camouflage gear (pants, jackets, tee-shirts, caps, helmets, etc. I advise that you avoid the guns and weapons). See links on God's Army theme page, for where to purchase items. If the clothes are donated, or if you get permission, write the words "God's Army" on each piece with a permanent marker. (If you need to return the clothing, you can use a child's washable marker, but make sure its completely washable). Ideally, purchase some camouflage tee-shirts or helmets that you can give the children to take home with them after the series is over.
Adult Camouflage gear (Write the words "God's Army" on each piece, as explained above).
Washable Face paint (red, brown, black, green)
Moist wipes
