Bible Kids Fun Zone is mostly Sunday school resources, but there are a few general themes: Besides the Flags/Patriotic theme, there is also an ABC Alphabet theme, as well as a few coloring pages and crafts for the Fun and Fitness theme. Bible Kids Fun Zone also believes we have God to thank, for giving us everything that made our country great, so when we celebrate, its also good to thank our awesome God and pray for our country.

Some of our patriotic crafts for kids can be used for any country. For example, kids can use the colors of their own country's flag to make clothes for the free Patriotic Bear Paper Dolls. Let our other flag craft pages be your inspiration to male patriotic crafts for your own country.

Fun Labor Day Activities For Preschoolers and Kinders
(Printable format - Fun Labor Day Activities for Preschoolers and Kinders)
The History of Labor Day (for the United States)

Labor Day is the first Monday in September. This year, we celebrate Labor Day on Monday, September ____. Lots of other countries celebrate Labor Day too! In Canada and some other countries, the word labor is spelled L-A-B-O-U-R. Americans celebrate Labor Day to honor the hard workers in America. The workers are the ones who have helped make our country great! Labor Day got started in 1872 when a carpenter named Peter McGuire got fed up because the workers were not being treated right. The hours they had to work were too long; and they wanted to be paid fair wages. Peter was brave. He got together 100,000 workers to go on strike. Going on strike means you refuse to work. When workers are on strike they ask for better pay, or to be treated better. And, that's exactly what Peter and the other workers did as they marched through the streets of New York City.

But it didn't end then. Peter felt strongly about fair treatment and fair pay for all workers. For the next ten years, Peter spoke out for workers to be treated better. Then Peter had an idea! He would start a special holiday for workers, and have a big parade! So on September 5, 1882, 10,000 workers marched in the very first Labor Day parade. Years later, in 1894 Labor Day became an official holiday for the United States. Today, families and kids celebrate Labor Day in different ways: Neighborhood Parades, picnics at a park, barbecues with friends, or just relaxing and enjoying the end of summer together. Lots of kids like to make flag crafts or other patriotic crafts too! Later we have some fun patriotic crafts to make too.

Let's Talk About Labor Day!

Who wants to share with the class what you and your family is going to do to celebrate Labor Day this year. Let children raise their hands and wait to be called on, to tell the class what their family plans are for Labor Day.

Let's Make Community Workers Puppets
Supplies: Instructions:

Tissue Paper Flag Group Activity: Let's Make A Flag!

Tissue paper (your flag colors)

Ideas: You can do this craft as a group activity or as an individual flag craft for children. Make copies for each group of 4-5 children, or each child. Prep: Cut 1-1/2” squares of tissue paper, several layers at a time. Place each color in a separate envelope or paper bag. Draw a flag on the sheet of construction paper or card stock. Make copies on a copier for individual crafts. Craft: Show children what colors the flag should be. Children color the flag. Show them how to roll up the tissue paper into balls. Place glue on the flag, one area at a time. Help children glue the balls to the flag. Let children glue stars on the flag.

Community Worker Puzzles

Prep: Make copies of workers onto card stock (or glue onto cardboard later). Make sure there are enough boy pictures for the boys, and enough girl pictures for the girls. Craft: Let children choose a community worker. They color their picture, glue it on cardboard. Cut the puzzle in 6-8 pieces for age 2-3, and 12-14 for age 4-5, or the number of pieces that you think would make it a little challenging for each child. Keep pieces in an envelope.

Guess-the-Worker Game
Supplies: Directions:

The following items can be life-size or doll-size:

Divide children into two teams. Place all of your items in a bag. The teams will take turns. Let a child come up and pull an item from the bag. The other team gets the first chance to guess which community worker wears the hat or uses the tool. If no one from the first team guesses correctly, the second team gets to guess, and so on. The first team to guess gets the point. Let the teams take turns pulling items from the bag until all of the items are gone. Tally the score. The team with the most points wins.

Hats and/or uniforms of different workers (Policeman hat, chef hat, fireman hat, construction worker hard hat, surgeon's scrub hat, nurse hat.

Tools of different workers: Hammer or tool belt, gardener's spade or plant pot, doctor's tools, designer's/seamstress' cloth, artist's paints, cook's pan.

Community Workers Match Game

(See list of supplies for Guess the Worker Game). Place all of the hats/uniforms on one table, and all of the tools on another table. Show children one item. Ask children, as a group, to find the matching uniform, hat or tools. For Kindergarten or school-aged children: Let the children do the activity one at a time. You give the child an item to match to make it more challenging, or let the child pick, to make it easier for younger children.

Community Worker Charades

Game Instructions: Children take turns pretending to be a worker. (See Community Workers and Pretend Play activities list below, or use books for ideas). Have each child whisper to you which worker they plan on doing, to make sure that the other children will likely be able to guess which community worker they are imitating.

Let's Learn About Community Workers
Supplies: Activity Instructions:

Dolls or puppets for different trades

Show each worker puppet as you talk about each worker: What they do for their work. Ask children questions about what tools they use, and what uniform they wear. Ask parents of children to come in to do a Show-n-Tell for the children, or the children can dress up in their parent's uniform/hat and do a Show-n-Tell for the class. (Make sure they know to only bring child-safe tools, and leave weapons and dangerous tools at home).
