Silly Sentences (Picture Sentences or Rebus Stories)
About Silly Sentences Learning Activity: This teaching resource includes fun ways for children to start expressing their creativity from the start of their learning by making picture stories with the help of an adult even as they only learn the first letter of the alphabet. After a baby learns what an object is, he begins to make the sound and say the word. Included in the ABC theme are 104 Things-that-begin-with-the-letter... pictures (4 pictures for each letter) in bright colors which the child uses to create their own Silly Sentences with the help of the teacher and the easy cut- and-paste word blocks. Children don't need to know how to spell, write or know the names of the parts of speech to do this easy fun language development exercise. The teacher simply helps the child pick the words from a stack to create his own Silly Sentences. All of theneeded printable pages, (words blocks, alphabet pictures and instructions) are included in the ABC theme download. Then children create their own picture books by gluing the pictures and words together on the brightly-colored pages to put together a book. The child can have the satisfaction of "reading" their own book back to other children by reading the pictures. They will probably remember many of the words as well, since the funny stories and bright colors help learning stick in their minds.

How to Use Silly Sentences:

Silly Sentences Learning Activity - Prep for Silly Sentences Individual Activity: Print picture and word pages. Make extra copies if needed. If using pictures in color, laminate them or cover with Press-n-Seal. Cut apart words and place in envelopes according to type ( Adjectives, verbs, etc). Cut out pictures or just cut them apart. Silly Sentence Individual Activity: Set up some of the words on table, according to type. Place some pictures down on the table. We provide detailed instructions on how to use the Silly Sentences in the ABC download. We provide two activities for using the activity with one child, and two activities for using Silly Sentences as a group activity. Prep for Silly Sentences Whole class Activity: Cut out the pictures like cards in a square shape, and use larger paper or poster board to construct your sentences, or just put on bulletin board. Instructions on how to use the activity are included in the ABC theme. Children use regular glue sticks to glue down their favorite Silly Sentence and color their pictures. Children can then “read” their sentences to their friends or the whole class. Note: We called this activity "Silly Sentences" because you're playing with words and they come out funny and sound silly sometimes. Please make sure children know you're not calling their work silly. That would be invalidating and cruel. Explain that the sentences are silly because you're playing with words, and they come out funny sometimes. Make sure they know that they do good work, and that they know that 'silly' is good for this activity. Call them Funny Sentences or rebus stories if you think it will cause any confusion.
