Children are often afraid of the dark, and imagine all kinds of things. Children will find this devotion very comforting, as it talks about God's great love is for us, and that he is with us even in the darkness. If your child is having specific fears about the darkness, you may want to extend the Talk Time and talk about the child's specific fears, and how God is with them.
Devotion for Children based on Psalm 139:7-12 - Can't Hide

Bible Verses: Psalm 139:7-12 Prep: Pray, asking the Lord to prepare your heart.
Items: Teddy bear or doll, flashlight, box to use as a boat. Focus: We have a great God who is kind and compassionate, slow to get angry, and forgiving.
Words for Parent to Say (Commentary in bold): Actions for Child (parent helps):

Psalm 139:7 Where could I go from your Spirit? Or where could I flee from your presence? 8 If I ascend up into heaven, you are there. If I make my bed in Sheol,* behold, you are there! (WEB

Show child how to lift doll way up high.
If we went up to the heavens, high above the sky, God is there, so we couldn't get away from him there. If we go deep down in the valley, God's Spirit would still be there. Take doll way down low.

Psalm 139:9 If I take the wings of the dawn, and settle in the uttermost parts of the sea; (WEB) Fly doll through the air.
Even if he goes tlying through the air, God is STILL there! Even if he goes way, way, way out in a boat, God is -- can you guess? -- yep! STILL there with him. Pull doll in boat (or box) and take him for a ride on rough waves, up and down.
Psalm 139:10 Even there your hand will lead me and your right hand will hold me. (WEB) Hold doll's hand.
Psalm 139:11 If I say, “Surely the darkness will overwhelm me; the light around me will be night”; (WEB) Turn off lights
Psalm 139:12 even the darkness doesn’t hide from you, but the night shines as the day. The darkness is like light to you. (WEB) Shine flashlight on doll.

Talk it Over: God still sees us in the darkness. There is no place we can hide, and no place where we can get away from God. But, we mostly don't want to anyways, because we know how much God loves us.

But, sometimes, if we think God is going to be mad at us, we might try to hide from him. And, if we do something wrong, and we aren't ready to face up to it, we might try to hide. But, the longer we stay away from God, the longer we will feel sad and guilty. If we stay away too long, our heart might start to get cold. But God's love always warms our hearts. When we spend time talking to God and tell him how we feel, he always hears us! And when we ask him to forgive us, he does! That's because he loves us so much!

Pray it: Pray a simple prayer and allow your child to say a prayer of their own.
Play it: Let's think about how God is with us no matter where we go or what we do today! Will you help me do that?
